Neuro Acupuncture for Chronic Neuropathic Pain in a Stroke Survivor
Overview
A 74-year-old woman who suffered a stroke 25 years ago experienced severe neuropathic pain in her paralyzed leg for nearly a year before seeking treatment. Following brain surgery in 1994, she remained partially paralyzed, relying on a support brace and cane for mobility. The pain, characterized by sharp, unpredictable bouts of stabbing and burning sensations, radiated from her spine down to her left lower limb. Unlike typical sciatic pain, it occurred randomly, regardless of activity or rest, and severely disrupted her sleep. Conventional medications provided little to no relief.
Key challenges
- Chronic Neuropathic Pain
The pain was severe, unpredictable, and resistant to conventional treatment.
- Disrupted Sleep
The frequent and intense pain episodes caused multiple awakenings throughout the night.
- Limited Mobility
Due to paralysis and stiff muscles, movement was restricted, further impacting quality of life.
- Ineffectiveness of Medications
Pharmaceutical interventions failed to provide meaningful pain relief.
Treatment
Neuro Acupuncture, combined with focused acupuncture techniques targeting neuropathic pain, was implemented. The treatment aimed to regulate nerve activity, improve circulation, and restore balance to the nervous system. Sessions focused on stimulating key points associated with pain modulation and motor function recovery. Progressive improvements were noted after 10 sessions:
- Pain episodes became less frequent and less intense.
- Sleep quality improved as nighttime pain disruptions decreased.
- Muscle stiffness in the affected arm and leg reduced, leading to smoother movements.
By the 12th session, the patient achieved complete pain relief. A follow-up one year later confirmed that the results were sustained, with no recurrence of symptoms.
Outcomes
- Complete Pain Relief
The patient experienced full resolution of neuropathic pain.
- Improved Sleep
With the absence of pain, sleep disturbances were eliminated.
- Enhanced Mobility
Increased range of motion in the affected arm and leg, with looser, more flexible muscles.
- Sustained Results
One year post-treatment, the patient remained pain-free.
Neuro Acupuncture proved to be an effective intervention for neuropathic pain in a stroke survivor, offering long-term relief and improving overall well-being.
